Every so often a project comes along that shows exactly what a screen room can be when it is built around the house instead of bolted onto it. This one, a three-level home on the water in [City, TX], is one of those.
The Challenge: A Home Built for the View
This is a home designed to be lived in from the outside in. Three levels, wide covered porches on each, and openings framed with arches and angles that follow the roofline. The owners built it for the Gulf breeze and the water view, and on paper it had both.
In practice, it had the same problem every waterfront home on the Texas coast has. The breeze comes in, and so does everything else. Mosquitoes at dusk, salt spray, leaves, and the insects that the humidity brings all year. The most beautiful part of the house was the part nobody could comfortably sit in for half the year.
What We Built
We screened every opening across the home’s porches, turning each one into a custom screen room. That meant working with the architecture rather than around it. The arched openings, the angled sections, the varying widths from floor to floor, all of it was measured and built to fit, so the finished screens follow the lines of the house instead of fighting them.
The result is what a screen room should be. From the outside, it reads as part of the original design. From the inside, the owners get the full breeze and the full view on every level, with the bugs and the weather shut out.
Why It Works on the Gulf Coast
A screen room on the water has to survive more than a screen room inland. We build with materials chosen for Gulf Coast heat, humidity and storm season, because a screen that cannot handle salt air and coastal wind is a screen you replace in a few years. Done right, an enclosure like this is a permanent part of the house.
The Result
Three levels of usable outdoor space that the family can actually use, morning and evening, spring through fall. The view they built the house for, now available every day instead of only on the rare still evening when the mosquitoes stay away.
That is the whole point of what we do. Not adding something to a home, but giving back the part of it that was always supposed to be the best part.
